Recruitment & Selection of Participants

In planning the PRISM program, the management team works closely with the Math and Science Coordinators (MSCs) from Atlanta Public Schools, City Schools of Decatur, Dekalb County Schools, and Fulton County Schools. The MSCs invite middle or high school teachers from their districts to apply to the program. We have worked with teachers in both the life and physical sciences.

The teachers are paired with Emory University graduate students from several science disciplines. Interested graduate students apply for this competitive annual fellowship opportunity in the early spring. Although no prior teaching experience is required, several students have already taught in K-12 classrooms and several are interested in teaching at the graduate and undergraduate level. Understanding that the PRISM fellowship will require several hours of work outside the laboratory, each graduate student's faculty mentor is asked to write a letter of support and recommendation. Groups of selected applicants are invited to an informal interview before a panel of PIs, the program coordinator, and a PRISM graduate fellow from the current year.

Undergraduate students join the collaborative teams in the fall and spring to assist with case facilitation in the classroom, and to contribute to continuing creative development.
