K-12 (Kindergarden to 12th grade) is shorthand for the precollege years, when students lay the groundwork for future academic work. One of our goals is to increase interest and participation in science careers, in particular among underrepresented minorities. We believe the time to start encouraging future scientists is during these years. How can this interest be nurtured? Teachers report that students begin to lose interest in the sciences in middle school. The transition from high school to college can be difficult. Students fail to see the relevance of science to their daily lives. Teachers struggle to excite students about science. Students and teachers alike are often unfamiliar with what it means to be a scientist or to do science. Teachers are eager to explore new teaching techniques and tools that excite student learning, but often have limited time to develop new skills. Our K-12 student programs focus on these very concerns.
K-12 Student Outreach Highlights
PREP (Preparatory Research Education Program)
PREP is a summer residential program that provides math, science, literature, critical thinking, and SAT preparation courses as well as academic and career planning workshops, college admissions and financial aid seminars, undergraduate and faculty mentors, and social activities for Atlanta Public Schools high school students.
Pipeline Program
Select students from the South Atlanta School of Health and Medical Sciences participate in the Emory Pipeline Program, an after-school academic enrichment, college-readiness, and mentoring program for high school students interested in health science careers. Emory students from the College, School of Medicine, School of Public Health, and Graduate School mentor the high school student participants and teach health science, healthy behaviors, presentation and study skills, and preparation for college. Sponsored by the Center for Science Education, the Office of University-Community Partnerships, and the School of Medicine's Office of Multicultural Medical Student Affairs.
Project GRAD Atlanta Partnership
The ECCSE hosts Project GRAD Atlanta programs to introduce high school students and parents to college admissions, financial aid, academic planning and college experiences.
