The Center for Science Education (formerly
the Hughes Science Initiatives Office) offers a variety of programs
that encourage the participation of underrepresented minority groups
and women in science-related fields.
These programs are supported by:
Emory College of Emory University, an equal opportunity,
affirmative action institution.
Association of American Medical
Colleges
Association of Schools for
Public Health
Howard Hughes Medical Institute
National Science Foundation
Some of our programs concentrate on individuals who,
due to gender or ethnicity, are underrepresented in the sciences.
"Underrepresented" means that these groups are not participating
in science, engineering and technology as much as the rest of the
population. The reasons for low participation are many. The above
organizations acknowledge that this situation exists, and seek to
increase the participation of underrepresented groups. Through their
funding, programs like ours encourage underrepresented individuals
to consider science and technology careers.
