Dr. Daphne Norton (Chemistry, Emory) has written a new laboratory manual for the general chemistry courses, CHEM 141L and 142L. This lab manual served as an impetus for curricular change. The new lab manual provides problem based learning exercises where students work in groups for scientific investigations. Communicatoin and interpersonal skills are developed through these group experiments.

Reorganization of the lab manual has also shifted greater focus on safety and proper science protocol. The lab manual has instructions for keeping a lab notebook and addresses issues of scientific ethics. In addition, the new manual provides a link between chemistry and the real world. For example, students monitor household products by analyzing the phosphorus content in fertilizer and titrating Coca-Cola to measure phosphoric acid in the beverage.

Sung Mo, a graduate student, helped Dr. Norton create an interactive syllabus on Blackboard. The site includes video clips to guide students through experimental procedures.
