Rienstra-Kiracofe (Chemistry, Emory University)
Project Description: Design and incorporation
of a Blackboard web site for use in the physical chemistry laboratory
classes, Chem 331L, Chem 332L, and Chem 332L-WR. The site contians
reference materials, frequently asked questions (FAQ), pictures
of laboratory experiments, MathCad tutorials, and course-related
documents.

(password access only)
Current State of Development/Updates: An undergraduate
student, Keller Barnhardt, worked during the summer to create content
and upload documents to the site. The site is now fully functional
and in use by all 30 students and 4 TAs in Chem 331L. Since Sept.
1, the sight has logged over 3500 hits. As the semester progresses,
new materials are continually uploaded to the site.
Future Plans: Continue to revise and update
content.
"The workshop met and exceeded my expectations. Using
what I learned at the workshop, I was able to establish a web-based
reference site with the Blackboard system. The new site will serve
three sections of the undergraduate physical chemistry laboratory.
Blackboard was particularly well suited for my needs -- allowing
creation of a robust, access-controlled, and easily updated web
based site. Already some students have begun to use the web site,
and next fall (2001) the entire class of approximately 30 students
will use the site on a consistent basis throughout both the fall
and spring semesters. We have put digital photographs of the experimental
apparatus used in Chem 331L/332L/332L-WR on the new Blackboard web
site. The photographs allow students to study the instrument during
their pre-lab preparation and are also useful during post-lab write-ups.
We have also compiled a "Frequently Asked Questions" (FAQ) list
based on commonly asked student questions. Other content on the
Blackboard site includes reference materials such as software tutorials,
mathematical equations, and web links to useful internet databases.
I have also pre-viewed my site to several other chemistry faculty
who have expressed interest in using Blackboard. This summer I have
an undergraduate student who will be working with me to add more
content to the site. In conclusion, I now have an invaluable web-based
resource for my class, which was made possible through the workshop.
I highly recommend this workshop!"
