Center for Education Integrating Science, Mathematics and Computing - Student Programs
CEISMC seeks to create a coordinated set of programs and
services that reflect and promote national standards for science
and mathematics education at the pre-college level. CEISMC is
providing statewide leadership in the systemic improvement of
science and mathematics in K-12 education for all students,
particularly those typically under-served in these disciplines.
This is achieved by promoting challenging mathematics, science,
and technology-based learning experiences; collaboration with
key partners in business, education, government and the
community; and modeling of effective classroom practices,
technology integration, and continuous evaluation.
Georgia Tech School of Biology Summer Program
Provides lectures, demonstrations and hands-on experiments
that challenge rising juniors and seniors from area high schools,
giving many of them a taste for scientific research. Provides

Water Workshop
This summer we offered an inquiry-based workshop entitled, "Water, Water, Everywhere: Is It Any Good to Drink?" conducted by Atlanta Public School master teachers Deneen McBean-Warner, Nikki Mouton, Rosa Roberts and Will Todd. The workshop was been designed around the premises exposed by the National Center for Improving Science Education and The Biological Sciences Curriculum Study (BSCS). Science should be exciting and related to the students' real world experiences. Results of the BSCS study indicated that teachers for a variety of reasons were not designing lessons that addressed their students' "real life" experiences. The framework of this professional development workshop will allow teachers to:
? Explore and create curricula consisting of hands-on activities that address a variety of learning styles
? Develop and enhance their scientific and technological knowledge base
? Examine socially and meaningful scientific content that could later be explored with their students
? Develop a constructivist approach to learning by designing exciting activities in cooperative groups
The final product will be one that addresses National, State and System curriculum objectives.
We collaborated with the Dr. Melissa Demetrikopoulos, Center for Behavioral Neuroscience faculty, in organizing a teacher workshop on Diversity and Adaptations in the Brain for middle school teachers.
Neuroscience workshop for Teachers (co-sponsored by the CBN)
The workshop, facilitated by Dr. Demetrikopoulos and GIFT teacher David Parlier, used brain diversity as a way to expand upon the external characteristics that are typically used to study the Life Science curriculum objectives for the state of Georgia. 18 participants attended the weeklong workshop and had access to the various brain specimens and other resources used in the workshop for their classroom.
Excellence in Curriculum Integration through Teaching Epidemiology (EXCITE)

Experiments in Molecular Biology: Biology 321
Introduction to techniques used in prokaryotic and eukaryotic molecular biology. Experimental approaches introduce students to gene cloning, Southern blotting, and molecular analysis of chromosomal breakpoint mutations. Computer analysis of DNA and protein sequences also explored. Prerequisite: Biology 143 and consent of instructor.
Unlike other project labs, which are developed primarily by professors, the labs for Bio 324 are currently being designed by undergraduates working together with professors in their research labs. For two semesters, these students are simultaneously getting research credit, learning the concepts and techniques of their respective system, and designing laboratories, which they will then help teach in the Spring. The first module will look at limb-bud development in chicks and will be mentored by Dr. Bill Elmer of the Biology Department and two of his Undergraduate Research students, Rob Simon and Miranda Hoy. The second module will study signal transduction in a single/multicellular slime mold and will be mentored by Dr. Karl Saxe of the Anatomy and Cell Biology Department and his student, Greg Novak. Other modules in development include C. elegans spermatogenesis and Drosophila development.
Coastal Biology: Biology 329
The Coastal Biology class takes place in two stages. Each year in the spring semester, two hours of credit are earned in the lecture portion of the class. In May, the class moves to St. Simons Island, one of Georgia's Golden Isles, for approximately two weeks of lab activities for two additional credit hours. (This is a summer school class offering, and summer school fees apply.) Animal diversity, the ecology of beaches, dunes, marshes, maritime forests, and docks are studied. Students also study the 5 barrier islands and do trawls in the tidal rivers and sounds. At the coast, students are required to conduct ecological or behavioral investigations and report on their findings. Sixteen juniors (occasionally a sophomore) are chosen for the class. The best way to enroll is to attend the department information meeting for biology majors before preregistration and pick up an application form. If you like field studies, this is a course you should not miss!!
Experimental Physiology: Biology 337
Laboratory intensive course in modern techniques of cellular and systems physiology research.
Ecology: Biology 347
Relationships between organisms and their environments, ecosystems, communities and populations. Field studies conducted in various natural areas in Georgia, including a weekend trip to the coast.
Experimental Neurobiology: Biology 361
A course in experimental neuroscience designed for juniors who may be interested in research and which provides an introduction to current concepts, analytical methods, and laboratory techniques.
Prerequisite: Bio 360 or consent of instructor.
Plant Population Biology: Biology 435
The structure and dynamics of plant populations and communities, classification, and phylogenetic relationships of seed plants.
Vertebrate Population Biology: Biology 445
Evolution, ecology, and behavior of vertebrate populations. Laboratory stresses classification and the natural history of local vertebrates.
The Integrated Laboratory: Chemistry 291/292L
Courses focus on modern analytical and instrumental techniques, such as: spectroscopy, chromatography, and electrochemistry.
Bioanalytical Laboratory: Chem 346L
This laboratory deals with current instrumentations and analytical techniques applied in different fields of science such as Biochemistry, Molecular Biology, Biotechnology, Pharmacology, Environmental and Clinical Toxicology, and Medicine. Instruments used in this laboratory are Nuclear Magnetic Resonance, Mass Spectrometer, UV-Vis Spectrophotometer, Capillary Zone Electrophoresis, High Performane Liquid Chromatography, Spectrofluorometer, etc. The course is designed to introduce students to the research application of these bioanalytical techniques. Experiments are designed as simple research project. Other laboratory activities includes journal-type laboratory report, oral and written proposal on innovative techniques and application and on-site visit to different research facilities in Emory and CDC

Community benefit is a key element of successful proposals.
CAISER: Collaborative Approach in Improving Science Education and Research
From the CAISER page: "CAISER is a network of faculty working together in the development of teaching modules including lectures, experiments and tutorials, and in the formation of inter-institutional research. Resources from different universities will be available to the participants to encourage multi and inter disciplinary reserach and education between faculty and students. Workshops will be established to design and evaluate teh network's projects and role in overall science education. VideoCom, Web pages, research software for visualizatoin, modeling and numerical analysis will be used to facilitate the collaboration between these schools. An intensive dissemination and evaluation procedure will be designed to evaluate the different activities and function of the network."
Governor's Teaching Fellows (GTF) Program
"Established in 1995 by Governor Zell Miller, the program is designed to address our statewide need to improve undergraduate instruction... The program focuses on an array of instructional, technological, and professional topics that emerge from the interests and needs of the participants. These symposia are also designed to help the Fellows implement projects that will enhance the quality of undergraduate education on their home campuses... Participants are selected on the basis of teaching experience, interest in continuing instructional and professional development, ability to have an impact on their campus, and on a strong commitment and support by their home institution during their participation in the program. Any full-time, regular faculty member may apply... Participants receive a stipend for full participation in either program. Meals, lodging, and travel expenses are provided by the GTF Program."

Classroom Speakers
We recruit Emory faculty and students to conduct talks and seminars on current trends and developments in the scientific arena. Speakers help to bring their real-life experiences to enliven the classroom atmosphere and to stimulate discussion and debate. Speakers are positive role models who introduce students to various health and science careers.
