the Center for
Disease Control and Prevention (CDC), in conjunction with the

EXCITE (Excellence in
Curriculum Integration though Teaching Epidemiology).
Objectives:
Teach basic concepts of epidemiology using real world problems:
- Study birth defect cases identified in Brownsville,
Texas.
- Identify risk factors that have been scientifically
linked to birth defects.
- Increase knowledge of folic acid and folate sources
and encourage tointegrate sources into daily dietary intake.
Promote in a variety of settings:
- Math, science, and health classes.
- High school and middle school literacy levels.
The workshop will take place June 14, 2002,
in the Emory School of Nursing,
Room 110, from 9:00-5:00.
Applications must be received by June 3, 2002.
Participants will receive a $100.00 stipend for their
participation, with the opportunity to
earn an additional $200.00 for implementing the material in their
lesson plan, and
completing the evaluation afterwards.
Evaluation (additional $200.00): Once the workshop is completed,
teachers are asked to
(1) implement the material covered in their lesson plan, (2) submit
a 3-4 page narrative
and a copy of the lesson plan used, and (3) complete the evaluation
tool developed by
the CDC and CSE. The evaluation must be submitted by January 17,
2003, in order to
receive the additional $200.00

to the nature of
this workshop, math, health and science teachers are encouraged
to apply as a team, in
hopes of having the subject matter taught using an interdisciplinary
