This summer, the Center
for Science Education (CSE) at Emory, along with the Centers
for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC) will be offering a
2-day workshop on the aspects of epidemiology. This workshop will
include defining epidemiology and biostatistics, outbreak investigations,
a seminar at the CDC, along with a Global Health Odyssey Tour. Participants
will also be given the opportunity to meet scientists employed by
the CDC, as well as the chance to ask questions related to this
field.
The workshop will take place June 24-25, from
9:00-5:00, at the Emory University School of Nursing, Room 112.
Deadline for registration is June 7, 2002
Participants will receive a $200.00 stipend for their
participation, with the opportunity to earn an additional $300.00
for implementing the material in their lesson plan, and completing
the evaluation afterwards. SDUs offered, subject to Atlanta
Public School Systems approval.
Evaluation (additional $300.00): Once the workshop
is completed, teachers are asked to (1) implement the material covered
in their lesson plan, (2) submit a 3-4 page narrative and a copy
of the lesson plan used, and (3) complete the evaluation tool developed
by the CDC and CSE.
The evaluation must completed and submitted by January 17, 2003,
in order to receive the additional $300.00
The workshop has space for 30 Atlanta Public School
High School Teachers. Due to the nature of this workshop, math and
science teachers are encouraged to apply as a team, in hopes of
having the subject matter taught using an interdisciplinary design.
