| Evaluating Online Resources:
a WebQuest
During science fair preparation, many students will
use the web as a tool to research their projects. Often the web
pages they find will lack relevant or correct information; this
will impede the research process and cause the reliability of their
research to be compromised. Your mission, should you decide to accept
it, is to find science fair resources that are reliable and contain
valid information.
The Mission
Divide into 5 teams. Within each team decide on who
will approach each question. Gather and share
data for 1.5 hours and report back. Evaluate the resources below
in addition to ones you find using the rubric and explain why some
sites are useful and some are not. Complete a website evaluation
sheet on what you have discovered and what you still want to know.
Create a document summarizing answers to present to other groups.
- Where is the online science fair project guide
for the GSEF?
- Where can students find guides for writing a research
report?
- Where can good examples of science fair projects
be found?
- What are some good science sites for general background
research?
- What are some issues that you have encountered
while helping your students do web research?
- What are the characteristics of a good science
fair project?
- What is the worst site you found?
- Which sites are useful, for students to identify
project?
- Which sites are most useful for teaching the scientific
process?
