These
competitions are important ways for the Emory science community
to get involved in the greater Atlanta community. This year, the
Hughes Science Initiatives staff, along with volunteers from the
Student Undergraduate Research Experience (SURE), judged science
fair entries at Slaton Elementary School, a school in the Atlanta
Public School System. Slaton, a 70 year-old school located in southeast
Atlanta has a large international student body. International students
now account for approximately one-third of the schools enrollment.
In the past these students hailed primarily from Cuba, Ethiopia,
Haiti, Kenya, Mexico, Nigeria, South Africa but increasingly are
newly arrived Vietnamese refugees.
