Maureen McManus, environmental and physical science teacher at Southside High School in Atlanta Public Schools, developed 3 problem-based learning cases and produced a revised detailed syllabus for her environmental science course. The cases she developed with Svea Closser, a graduate student PRISM fellow, are poignant, relevent, and timely. The cases' controversial issues will engage students and compel them to use evidence-based statements to discuss real-world problems.

Another case developed by Ms. McManus places students in the role of Mayor of Atlanta, in which they must decide how to best handle the sewer problem that has been plaguing the city of late. A third case addresses graphic skills and population dynamics by having students match graphs of population growth with the appropriate spcies.
