Adrienne Doanes, a teacher at Therrell
High School, has been working closely with the Emory College Center
for Science Education (ECCSE) to help develop the 9th grade academy
at the school. The purpose of the academy will be to increase students'
confidence in success at a four year institution after high school.
Subject matter taught in the 9th grade includes language arts, physical
education, ROTC, special education, remedial math, algebra I, geometry,
physical science, biology, and ninth grade literature and composition.
High school students in the Atlanta Public School system are required
to pass an end of course test (EOCT) to determine whether or not
a student has successfully mastered the competencies listed under
state and district guidelines for a particular subject. Resource
Guides will be developed to help students prepare for the test.
These guides will be created by the teachers and contain daily detailed
lesson plans based upon objectives in the Georgia High School Graduating
Test, the Georgia Performance Standards, and the National Science
Education Standards. Program effectiveness will be evaluated by
comparing EOCT test scores from past years.
