SURE 2008: Information for Incoming Participants

Program Dates: Tuesday, May 27 - Friday, August 1, 2008

:: General Information
Last updated: April 14, 2008.

Alcohol Policy:

SURE participants agree to abide Emory's Alcohol policy, available in full at http://conduct.emory.edu/campus_alcohol_policy.pdf (click here to see an html version of the policy). Participants who violate this alcohol policy will be dismissed from the program. In the case of Emory participants, they will also be referred to the Office of Student Conduct.

Consumption of alcohol within fraternity houses is allowed only in accordance with respective national organizational policies and university and IFC guidelines.

The legal drinking age in Georgia is 21 years of age. Any student or employee under the age of 21 who purchases or knowingly possesses an alcoholic beverage is in violation of state law and University policy. Similarly any person who furnishes an alcoholic beverage to a person under 21 years of age is also in violation.

Arrival to Campus:

SURE fellows will reside in the Kappa Alpha and Pike houses on Fraternity Row. Room and roommate assignments will be made in May.

You may view a campus map at the following URL: http://map.emory.edu. The legacy map link offers a map that is compatible with most browsers.

May 27, 10am - 4pm: check-in will be done at the dorm, follow the signs that will be posted around campus. All program participants (whether they reside on campus or not) must report to the dorm to collect an information package and be issued parking tags and keys, as appropriate.

May 27, after 4pm: proceed to the dorms as above. There will be instructions posted about whom to call to get your keys.

Arrivals after May 27: must get prior approval from program organizers. Late arrivals are very much discouraged as orientation activities are scheduled for the morning of May 28 and a welcome picnic is scheduled for 5 p.m. on Tuesday May 27.

Those arriving after May 27 should proceed directly to Alabama Hall for dorm keys and a parking tag, if needed.

Early check-ins are not possible.

Check-out day is Friday August 1, when all residents need to vacate their rooms and turn in their keys and parking tags at Alabama Hall. The last "work" day of the program is Thursday, July 31, when we'll have our poster session and closing banquet. Program participants not residing on campus and who are issued parking tags ("commuters") also need to return these tags by August 1.

The Housing (summer conferences) office is typically open 8:30am - midnight on weekdays.

Calendar / Schedule: The SURE 2008 calendar is now available as a pdf file. Once the program is in session, the calendar will be maintained via our LearnLink intranet.

Campus resources: A student ID card will be issued during the first week of the program. This card will give you access to libraries, computer centers, and the gym. For details on the EmoryCard, see http://www.emory.edu/EMORYCARD/.

Dining: A meal plan will not be available, however, there are several dining facilities on campus. For additional information please visit the University Conferences web site, and choose the link for information on meals and catering and other campus amenities: http://www.emory.edu/dining/.

Directions to Campus and the Dorms: Transportation from the airport is available via public transportation (MARTA, which combines light rail and bus services), a shuttle service, or by taxi. Emory's website provides detailed directions to campus, see http://www.emory.edu/directions.cfm.

If riding MARTA (light rail) from the airport, you will need to ride north to Lindbergh station, then catch the #6 bus, which travels along the periphery of campus. Ask the driver to drop you off at the corner of Oxford Rd. and Dickey Dr. It is then a ~ 5 minute walk to the dorms (walk up Dickey Dr., turn left on Eagle Row). If you have bulky or heavy luggage, this could be uncomfortable.

Disability Services: If you require accomodations to ensure equal access, please contact us. Available services are listed in the Office of Disabilities Services' website at http://www.emory.edu/EEO.

Email & Internet access: An e-mail account will be assigned to you on the first week of the program. This account is part of LearnLink, an electronic system used extensively as a communication tool for the SURE program. Public terminals are available throughout campus. In using LearnLink and accessing and using the Internet via Emory accounts and connections, you agree to abide Emory University policy (http://policies.emory.edu); in particular, see ResNet and Peer to Peer file sharing utilities links.

Fun: Spontaneous fun will break out with a bit of help and planning from the resident RAs.

Gym: All SURE participants will have access to campus computer facilities, libraries, and gym. See http://www.wpec.emory.edu/ for an overview of the Woodruff PE Center.

Housing: For dorm check-in and check-out, see "Arrival" item.

Our dorms are located in the area of campus known as Eagle Row. These houses are air-conditioned and furnished and we, as a group, are responsible for any damages to the property. If damages occur, and the culprit is not identified, the cost of repairs will be split among all residents. You must return your keys and parking tags at the end of the program. Lost keys will cost $65 to replace, parking tags, $5.

You can also see virtual views of some of the rooms in our assigned dorms by selecting the Kappa Alpha and Pi Kappa houses from the following page: http://www.emory.edu/CONFERENCES/360.html

Rooms are doubles, and each room has a bed, desk, chair and dresser for each occupant. You will need to provide your own linens (full size).
Coin-operated washer/dryer facilities are available at each house. Each house has a common kitchen (stove, refrigerator, conventional and microwave ovens) and a local company rents dorm-size refrigerators. You must bring your own phone; each room will have an active phone line and roommates will share access to one voicemail account. All long-distance calls must be made via calling card (i.e., you will not be able to charge long-distance calls to your "bill").

See below for internet access.

Internet Access: All dorm rooms are Internet-ready wireless, and you are welcome to bring your personal computer. Much of the campus has wireless access. See http://it.emory.edu/unplugged.

Computer and internet access are available at our libraries, computer centers and in stand-alone stations in common areas (e.g., student center).

Laundry: Coin-operated washers and dryers are available at each dorm.

Mail: Mail, parcels and other deliveries can be received through our office. Please address correspondence as follows:

Participant's Name / SURE 2008
Center for Science Education
Emory University
1399 Oxford Rd.
Atlanta, GA 30322

Because of how mail is processed by our campus, you will not be able to do a "change of address" card to redirect your mail at the end of the program. Please request that it be forwarded for the duration of the program only (May 27 - August 1). Once the program ends, we will forward personal correspondence for a limited time only.

Necessities: Each of the dorms has a kitchen and refrigerator, and students may rent mini-fridges to increase storage room. Within walking distance are a CVS pharmacy carries basic cooking items (milk, cereal, canned goods, frozen goods, etc.) and Sheffield's Meat Market (for meat products and some fruits and veggies). A Publix supermarket can be reached by bus and a university shuttle also goes to this supermarket. In walking distance is Emory Village, a group of businesses that includes several restaurants, a hair salon, two coffee shops, two ice cream parlors, a bank, a gas station and a flower shop.

Parking: SURE participants will receive parking tags at no cost. These tags allow parking behind the dorms and in the parking deck closest to the dorms, and need to be returned at the end of the program.

Payment: Your stipend will be available early on the second week of the program. You will receive your stipend as a check written to your name. A small portion of your stipend will be held back and distributed at the end of the program, when all program requirements (e.g., poster presentation, program evaluation) are satisfied. There are several banks near campus, and a credit union and ATM machines are available at the student center. Please make sure you bring sufficient funds to tide you over until your stipend is available, and budget yourself accordingly.

Your stipend is taxable. Please see http://www.cse.emory.edu/sciencenet/undergrad/SURE/SURE_taxes.html.

Roommate assignments: A list will be emailed to all participants in early May. Resident advisors (RAs, who are Emory students who are also participating in SURE) will be responsible for organizing social activities and reporting problems at the dorms.

Time Off: If you will be away while the program is in session, you must receive advance approval from both program administrators and your research supervisor.

Travel: You are responsible for travel arrangements.

Work Hours: In agreeing to participate in SURE, you agree to work ~ 40 hours/week, and attend all required program activities. You should discuss your daily schedule with your laboratory supervisor upon arrival.

:: Program Priorities

The SURE program offers a 10-week long, intensive research experience. We expect students to dedicate approximately 40 hours/week to their research project (and other program activities). It is our goal to allow participants to explore the realities and opportunities of science careers, research in particular. We want SURE to be an enjoyable, memorable experience.

We realize that the SURE program can be a very demanding experience, and want participants to know the program staff is here to help you. Should you feel overwhelmed by the program, or find yourself experiencing a personality conflict with a fellow participant (e.g., roommate) or research peer or mentor, please contact us. Misunderstandings often arise from mismatched expectations, and through dialogue we can make things better. Should an extreme personality or research interest conflict arise, we can make arrangements to identify a new research environment for you. We can only help when you communicate your concerns to us; feel free to let us know how things are going for you, any time. Your input allows us to constantly update this program into an experience that serves today's undergraduate researcher. A program evaluation form will be available by program's end.

If you have any questions, please feel free to contact Cathy Quinones (SURE program coordinator) at (404) 727-3439.
